The current highest level is currently level 90. You shouldn't hesitate the slightest, and OSRS gold go forward and buy drygore maces. On a personal note I've saved over 100 million from scratch to buy a drygore mace which has been a major improvement. The Drygore mace in my opinion is the top choice because of two reasons- one is that it's marginally cheaper as the Rapier or Longsword in addition to the fact that it comes with a 9 prayer bonus.
Another thing to be aware of is it is true that the Combat Triangle is ULTIMATE today. It makes a tremendous difference what gear you wear, what attack style you utilize, etc. Monsters generally have a particular weakness which is why if you choose to use their specific attack style, that's also fairly effective.
However it is important to recognize that this weakness is somewhat general. Fire Giants, for example display a weakness to Slash attacks. This means that melee is highly effective against them, and they're particularly vulnerable to slash attacks- but crush and stab work fine. In reality you're unable to the targets with mage.
The same applies to your character. You are no longer able to combat in d'hide. To illustrate how awful this is, the numbers are similar to the following: wearing a ranged top and bottom, as well as a helm while fighting reduces the accuracy of your weapon by 27 percent. A MAGE-style top and bottom as well as a helm while meleeing reduce your accuracy by a staggering 45%. It's not clear if gloves or boots are going to have a huge effect though.
